Celebrating Black History Month with a Flavorful Lunch & Learn Series

At the Law Office of Salesia V. Smith-Gordon, Black History Month is more than just a time for reflection—it’s a celebration of culture, history, and heritage. This February, the team has embraced an inspiring Lunch & Learn Series, where members share signature dishes from their African heritage along with the powerful stories behind them.

Salesia Smith-Gordon kicked off the series with a vibrant display of flavors inspired by her upbringing in Ybor City, a historic neighborhood home to Black, Spanish, and Italian communities. Her carefully prepared meal featured Spanish yellow rice with saffron, spiced Spanish broiled chicken with olives, black beans with smoked turkey, green salad, Brussels sprouts, and lemon pound cake—all served atop a stunning Maasai Mara Shula table runner, adding a cultural touch to the experience.

Farah Jean Baptiste took the team on a journey through Haitian history and cuisine with an engaging Kahoot quiz, an informative tri-board display, and insightful discussions. The learning experience was enriched by an authentic feast of fried turkey, double-fried tostones, spicy cabbage, squash soup with beef and vegetables, Haitian rum cake, and traditional beverages like Kremas and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Another unforgettable session featured Robert Mighty, who transported the team to the vibrant island of Jamaica with a spread of traditional dishes, each carrying deep cultural and historical significance.

This Lunch & Learn Series is more than just a meal—it’s an opportunity to embrace and honor the resilience, contributions, and rich traditions of Black communities worldwide. By sharing flavors and stories, the team fosters deeper connections and appreciation for the impact of Black history on society today.
