Safe Use & Disposal of Prescription Drugs

As a retired pharmacist and community advocate, I’m passionate about promoting the safe handling and disposal of prescription medications. Each of us can play a role in preventing drug misuse, accidental poisoning, and environmental harm—starting right at home.

Why Prescription Drug Safety Is So Important

Every year, thousands of people—especially children, teens, and seniors—are harmed by unused or expired medications found at home. Even well-meaning sharing of medications can cause serious side effects or fatal interactions.

Prescription drugs, especially opioids, are often misused when they fall into the wrong hands. And improper disposal (like flushing them down the toilet) can contaminate water systems and endanger wildlife. That’s why safe storage and disposal practices are more than good habits—they’re public health safeguards.

What You Can Do

✔️Store Medications Securely

  • Use a locked medicine cabinet or box.
  • Keep medications in their original containers.
  • Ensure medications are out of reach of children and pets.

✔️ Regularly Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet

  • Check expiration dates at least twice a year.

  • Remove any medications you no longer use or need.

✔️ Never Share Prescription Medications

  • Even if symptoms are similar, the drug may not be safe for someone else.

What Not To Do

  • Do not flush medications unless the packaging says it’s safe to do so.

  • Do not throw medications in the trash where they can be retrieved and misused.

  • Do not give away leftover medications, even with good intentions.
