BEWARE: The Dangers of Medical Spa Treatments

Medical spas, also known as medispas and aesthetician centers are becoming increasingly popular. Nearly everyone wants to look better, but at what cost!? Medical spas not only serve as an excellent way for individuals to correct a specific area of their skin, but it can also serve as a relaxing spa treatment. Many medispas list an array of treatments from both, laser hair removal, microderm abrasion, microneedling, chemical peels and CoolSculpting

But there are a few risk factors that you should be aware of. Unfortunately, we have clients whose medispa day turned into a hospital stay. There can be rewards and risks.

What is a Medical Spa?
A Medical Spa is a spa-like facility that offers elective procedures to improve appearance by trained and licensed professionals under the care and direction of a licensed physician. Many times, people do not ask for a person’s license which can be an awful mistake. All people, even licensed, are not equipped to handle all procedures, by experience and by law. just about providing a pampering experience. Common treatments at a medical spa include:

Did you know that any doctor can perform cosmetic services in his/her primary medical office? However, an aesthetician or Medical Spa that is NOT a physician’s main office may be managed by an ARNP or a PA with the doctor’s supervision, though only certain procedures require the doctor’s direct supervision and presence.

We tend to trust a nice looking facility. We like looking a pictorial before & after results. Make sure to ask the hard questions like…”Who will be performing services? What license does that person possess? What experience does he/she have with my skin type particularly of highly melaninated.

Black skin has unique considerations for several procedure types for which scarring, keloid and hyperpigmentation. A medical history is important to relay to ascertain which procedure is more appropriate and which contraindicated.

Medical Spas Dangers
When getting treatments, the top priority is to ensure you protect your body and remain healthy. A huge part of doing this is to understand the dangers you can face at medical spas.

First, perform at home research on the Medispa and the procedure(s) you are considering BEFORE going to the medispa. Second, ensure you know the credentials of the person performing the procedure. Third, discuss pros, cons & adverse risks. Fourth, as best as possible, ensure the provider is following best practices from a health, procedural and hygiene standpoint which can lead to dermatitis, swelling, pain and discomfort at or around the site as well as infection such as MRSA and staphylococcus. Treatments improperly performed may quickly lead to hospitalization due to infection due to unsafe and unskilled practices.

Along with this, there’s a chance that the individual providing service to you has just learned the skill. It’s natural to assume that everyone at the clinic is skilled and experienced, but you could be receiving service from someone who is unskilled, opening the door for all types of health concerns. This is especially something to consider as doctors aren’t required to be on-site in every state.

With that said, it’s important to receive treatments from licensed professionals who are skilled, experienced, and have received trusted reviews from others, preferred who are similar to you by gender, skin type and general health conditions.

If you have suffered trauma from an adverse reaction to medical spa treatments, contact the Law Office of Salesia Smith-Gordon, PA to get the necessary legal help and the justice you deserve.
